08.09.2017

The international network INELI - Balkans brings together librarians and experts from the Balkan region to develop a sustainable network to promote joint innovation, e-learning and the introduction of new ideas.

The third, final meeting took place on September 1st and 2nd in Athens. It was mainly focused on the development of a common strategy for the sustainable development of the project in the future and it was attended by 51 representatives of libraries from the Balkan region as well as librarians from INELI Asia and INELI Iberoamerica.

The event was opened by Deborah Jacobs, director of the Global Libraries program at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and Dimitris Protopsaltou, one of the founders of Future library.

During the two days of the meeting, the participants had the chance to get acquainted with the newly opened cultural center, donated to the state by the private foundation "Stavros Niarchos". Founded by one of the nation's richest shipyards, the foundation has built a cultural center that houses the National Opera and the National Library of Greece, and the surrounding area is occupied by a park, bearing its name. Designer of the impressive meeting is the world-famous architect Enzo Piano. Тhe impressive opera has a main stage for 1,400 spectators and an "alternative" scene for 400 people dedicated to artistic experiments with all forms of the music theater. In the complex, completed and handed over to the state in February this year, $ 630 million was invested, and the foundation will bear its costs in the next 5 years through donations. The Library of the National Library of Greece is partly transferred to the new building, the reading room, the children's department of the library and a part of the specialized departments are to be opened soon.

The meeting ended with the promise of maintaining active communication between all participants and seeking new opportunities for ongoing project activities.
