Children helping children

The first edition of The National Poetry Contest for young authors "Atanas Smirnof" was held in the spring of 2012. The contest was organized by innovative community center "Razvitie- 1869", Dryanovo. The 150 entries for the contest were reviewed by a jury that included representatives from The Association of the Bulgarian writers, RIO Gabrovo, the innovative center and the Municipality of Dryanovo. The entries were divided in two age groups- primary and middle school level. The jury was impressed by the young authors from "St.Climent of Ochrid" school in Kardjali. The wonderful poems brought well deserved prizes to the children. The Grand Prize in the middle school level was received by Emre Mjurren Mehmed and Angel Todorov was placed second. Apart from diplomas, the children received 30 and 50 lv awards.
So far nothing sets this competition apart from others. But a difference was made later. Earlier this week Violeta Mihova, head of the "Petya Dubarova" literary club at "St.Climent of Ochrid" school, called the innovative community center in Dryanovo to inform them of a decision, made by the children who won the competition. Emre and Angel had decided to donate their prize money to the children from the Center for Public Support and wish them a happy childhood. Violeta also said she teaches her students to love and help people. The wish of the little donors is that the children from the Center would use the money to buy sweets or balls for playing games in accordance with their own desires. One day later Violeta sent an e- mail to the innovative community centre, promising the children of Dryanovo paintings from their Kardjali peers. These will also go to people from the Center for Public Support.
Such gestures of warmth and attention seem to have been left behind. Very few of us remember a kindness such as picking up the phone and calling to donate money to help children smile. It seems that the children and the teachers from Kardjali taught us a lesson in humanity and made us reflect on the everyday things of life. Not all is lost!
